After spending 8 years in prison for an unfortunate accident, heavyweight boxer Joey Nardone returns to a solitary life in Philadelphia. His time in prison has changed him, making him feel like a stranger in his own neighborhood. Searching for normalcy, Joey takes a job at the boxing gym where he used to train. He finds comfort in the familiarity of his old friends, but they notice a change in him. The spark and zest for life once inherent in Joey seem to have vanished.

Struggling to find meaning, Joey meets a 14-year-old Puerto Rican kid named Jesus, who is repeatedly beaten up by the neighborhood bully. Jesus, not used to kindness from strangers, initially has no time for Joey. Life is hard for Jesus, who not only deals with bullies at school but also has an alcoholic, abusive father at home.

The chemistry between these two unlikely friends is pure magic. Joey, an over-the-hill ex-boxer, and Jesus, a target for bullies, form a bond that gives them both a new sense of purpose.
